LGBTQ+ Affirming Care In Bend, Oregon—Why Inclusive Care Matters

Why I’m Committed to LGBTQ+ Affirming Chiropractic Care in Bend, OR

I recently had an experience with a healthcare provider that left me feeling judged and unwelcome because of my sexual orientation. I did my due diligence, asking if they worked with the queer community prior to my appointment, only to discover their biases at the in-person appointment itself. I find myself deeply upset and, admittedly, a little embarrassed to say that I've been less willing to seek the care I need as a result.

As someone who reads as female and has suffered from chronic pain, I have prior experience with being dismissed in healthcare. But this was the first time my queerness factored into the equation. Or so I thought.

While this was the most blatant example of homophobia in healthcare I’ve experienced to date, I’m in the process of reexamining subtler, more insidious instances. I’m in a position—one that many in our community are not—where I can largely choose whether or not to disclose my queerness to my healthcare providers. I don’t know how many other instances of discrimination I have dodged because of code switching. But I do know I’m not alone.

Why LGBTQ+ Affirming Healthcare Matters (Especially When You’re in Pain)

We deserve affirming care. That means care where you don’t have to:

  • brace yourself before you walk in the door

  • edit your language or your life to avoid judgment

  • wonder if a provider’s “politeness” will disappear the minute you mention your partner, your identity, or your community

It means you can show up as your complete, authentic self and don’t have to perform emotional math. And when you’re dealing with chronic pain, migraines, or hypermobility, the last thing you need is the added weight of not feeling safe with the person you’re asking for help.

Bend Pride, Queer Joy, and the Reminder I Needed

To those of you who were at Bend Pride this year, whether as a part of the queer community or as an ally, thank you. Being surrounded by queer joy and having the opportunity to love on my community so soon after my nerve-wracking experience meant the world to me. It reminded me why visibility matters and why safe spaces in healthcare aren’t optional. I am now more committed than ever to creating a safe space for our community and beyond.

What You Can Expect from Me as a Queer-Affirming Chiropractor in Bend, Oregon

There are many things I love about my profession as a chiropractor. Being in a position to create a safe space for my community—one where patients can show up as their complete, authentic selves, regardless of what’s happening outside those four walls—is such an amazing privilege.

Here’s what that looks like in real life, in my office:

  • Respect, plain and simple (including names and pronouns)

  • Consent-based care (you can ask questions, pause, or say “no” at any point)

  • Clear explanations of what I’m doing and why

  • No assumptions about your relationships, your body, or your identity

  • A healthcare experience that doesn’t depend on how “cishet” passing you are

If you’ve ever felt judged in a healthcare setting, I want you to know you don’t have to “prove” anything here to be treated with dignity.

How Chiropractic Care May Support Migraines, Hypermobility, and Chronic Pain

People often find my office because they’re tired of being brushed off, especially if their symptoms are complex, chronic, or hard to summarize in a quick appointment.

In my practice, I commonly work with folks navigating:

  • Migraines / headache patterns (often with neck/jaw/upper back tension or sensitivity)

  • Hypermobility (including people who’ve been told they’re “just flexible” while living with real pain and instability)

  • Chronic pain (especially when it’s been minimized, dismissed, or treated like a personality flaw)

Chiropractic care isn’t about forcing your body into a one-size-fits-all mold. It’s about meeting you where you are, listening carefully, and building a plan that supports your nervous system and your day-to-day function.

A Quick Checklist: How to Find LGBTQ+ Affirming Healthcare (If You’re Still Looking)

If you’re not sure where to start or you’re still rebuilding trust after a bad experience, here are a few signs a provider may be affirming (and a few questions you can ask before you ever set foot in the office).

Green flags to look for:

  • They explicitly state LGBTQ+ affirming (not just “everyone welcome”)

  • They use inclusive language on forms and websites

  • They’re willing to answer questions without getting defensive

  • They focus on your goals and consent, not judgment or assumptions

Questions you can ask when you call or email:

  • “Do you have experience working with LGBTQ+ patients?”

  • “Do you use chosen names and pronouns?”

  • “What is your approach if a patient has had trauma in healthcare settings?”

You deserve clarity. You deserve respect. You don’t owe anyone your vulnerability if they haven’t earned your trust.
